Opening Soon: Amsterdam Plaza
T
hanks to a concerted effort by all involved in the development, Amsterdam Plaza is set to open its doors to the public as scheduled in the second quarter of 2022. Despite facing several challenges along the way, our persistence and determination is set to culminate in a vibrant shopping centre, designed to service the basic needs of residents. With one tenant already taking occupancy, the rest are set to follow as soon as their specified store fit outs are complete. As Shift Capital, we are delighted that everything is on track developmentally so we can introduce destination shopping to the town of Amsterdam by bringing convenience to the doorstep.
Boasting a GLA of 2 400m2, the centre, located in the small town of Amsterdam (officially eMvelo) falls under the jurisdiction of the Mkhondo Local Municipality in South African Province of Mpumalanga. Given its proximity to the Eswatini border to the west, the population of Amsterdam is comprised of a large Swati populous who have traversed the border for various socio-economic reasons. On the South African side of the border, the most notable town occurring to the east of Amsterdam is Ermelo – approximately 77km away which serves as the nearest shopping destination for Amsterdam inhabitants.
In fact, it was this distance and the costs associated with commuting to Ermelo are the premises upon which the rationale behind the conceptualization of this development is based on. The establishment of Amsterdam Plaza will effectively negate the costs associated with shopping for essential goods by virtue of a carefully curated tenant mix will ensure shopping needs are addressed by way of a national supermarket, affordable clothing stores and a nationwide-favourite fast-food outlet amongst others.

Additionally, Ackermans, a South African household favourite retail outlet has already opened the doors to savings on the 24th of March of this year. With the grand opening scheduled for Freedom Day on the 27th of April 2022, all remaining tenants are set to start trading; including the Shoprite anchor, a Shoprite Liquor, Mr. Price, and a handful of niche stores.
